587 – Full Trust In Hashem – R Dovid Goldwasser

The Letter or The Source?

When Hashem Removes the “Security” to Strengthen Your Bitachon

Sometimes we think we have it handled.

We have the connection.
The recommendation.
The right person backing us.

We’re holding the “letter.”

And we feel safe.

But what happens when Hashem shows us that the letter was never the source?

The Chassid with the Precious Letter

A poor chassid once needed a large sum of money to marry off his daughter. The expenses of a chasunah were overwhelming, and he had nowhere to turn.

But then he received something extraordinary — a letter from the great Kotzker Rebbe.

A letter from the Kotzker was not a small matter. It was rare. Powerful. Influential.

The chassid thought, This is it. This letter will solve everything.

He traveled to the wealthy and refined gaon, Moshe Chaim Rottenberg, a brother of the Gerrer Rebbes, confident that once the letter was read, the money would be given.

He handed over the letter proudly.

Surely this would “do the trick.”

After reading it, Rav Moshe Chaim reached into his pocket…

…and handed him one dollar.

One dollar.

The chassid was stunned.

A letter from the Kotzker — and this is what it accomplished?

He left humiliated and frustrated. The dollar barely covered travel expenses. As he walked home, disappointment filled his heart.

How could this be?

The Unexpected Messenger

Lost in his thoughts, a messenger suddenly approached him.

“I was sent by Rav Moshe Chaim Rottenberg,” the man said. “He is covering all the expenses of your daughter’s chasunah. In full.”

Every expense. Paid.

The chassid was shocked.

He ran back immediately to understand what had happened.

“Why?” he asked. “When I came with the letter, you gave me only a dollar. Now you send everything?”

Rav Moshe Chaim answered gently:

“When you came in holding that letter, you were waving it like a flag. You believed the letter would bring the money. Your trust was in the paper — not in the Ribbono Shel Olam.”

“I wanted you to know it was never the letter. It is always Hashem.”

“For a moment, I withheld — so you would remember the true Source.”

The Subtle Danger of “Security”

This story carries a powerful lesson in bitachon.

Sometimes we place our trust in:

  • A connection

  • A business partner

  • A paycheck

  • A client

  • A doctor

  • A recommendation

And things go smoothly for years.

Then suddenly — the source dries up.

The job shifts.
The income slows.
The opportunity disappears.

And we panic.

But perhaps Hashem is whispering:

“Don’t confuse the pipeline with the Source.”

The pipeline can change.

The Source never does.

The Vilna Gaon’s Lesson

The talmidim of the great Vilna Gaon lived with extraordinary bitachon. They were careful not to overextend their hishtadlus. They davened. They trusted. They knew sustenance came only from Hashem.

There was even an incident where funds meant for the Vilna Gaon were misused by a dishonest gabbai. Yet the Gaon remained calm.

“If one channel closes,” he taught, “Hashem has many others.”

As Chazal say: Harbeh shluchim laMakom — Hashem has many messengers.

Provision does not depend on one person, one system, or one opportunity.

If one door shuts, another opens.

When Things “Dry Up”

Sometimes in life:

  • A business that flourished slows down.

  • A shidduch opportunity disappears.

  • A medical solution stops working.

  • A supportive person pulls away.

It feels like loss.

It feels like rejection.

But perhaps it is a recalibration.

Hashem occasionally shakes our stability — not to harm us — but to refine our emunah.

So we don’t say:

“My boss provides for me.”

“My clients provide for me.”

“My network provides for me.”

Instead we say:

“Hashem provides for me.”

The rest are only shluchim.

The True Meaning of Bitachon

Bitachon does not mean we don’t act.

It means we act — but we don’t attach our hearts to the action.

We make efforts in parnassah.
We pursue shidduchim.
We seek medical care.

But internally, we remember:

The letter is not the power.

The connection is not the power.

The money is not the power.

Hashem is.

Your Personal “Letter”

Maybe in your life right now, you’re holding something you believe is your guarantee:

A degree.
A savings account.
A particular relationship.
A business opportunity.

And perhaps Hashem gently reduces it.

Not to frighten you.

But to remind you.

Because when we rely solely on Him — the yeshuah comes cleaner, deeper, more complete.

The chassid received all the money.

But first, he had to learn Who truly sends it.

The Comforting Truth

No one should ever be discouraged.

If one channel dries up — it is not the end.

Hashem has countless messengers.

Your parnassah is not tied to one employer.
Your shidduch is not tied to one suggestion.
Your salvation is not tied to one solution.

There is only one Source of bracha.

And when we strengthen our bitachon, we connect directly to it.

The letter was never the miracle.

The miracle was remembering Who writes every letter in the first place.
