The Perfect Timing of Hashem
There’s a timeless verse in Kohelet that has profound wisdom for every moment of our lives:
“לַדֵּת, לַהֲמוֹת, לִטְעֹן, לִזְרֹעַ — There is a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to uproot.”
At first glance, it seems simple—birth, death, action, pause. But the deeper lesson is about trusting the divine timing of Hashem. Every event in our lives happens exactly when it is supposed to happen, no sooner, no later.
Waiting Years for a Miracle
I want to share a story that brings this verse to life. There was a couple, happily married, but for many years they struggled with one of the deepest longings of their hearts: to have a child.
They tried everything—medical advice, treatments, prayers—but year after year, nothing worked. Seven, eight, ten years passed, and their hope began to fade. Frustration, sadness, and even despair settled in. They tried praying, but it seemed as though their prayers were unanswered.
Then, as if by divine orchestration, a great Tzadik—a righteous person known for his incredible power to bless—happened to be traveling through their town. He was staying nearby for just a few days.
The wife said to her husband:
“Look! The Tzadik is right here, practically on our doorstep! Go get a blessing. Don’t miss this opportunity!”
With a mixture of excitement and hesitation, the husband approached the Tzadik. The Tzadik smiled and said:
“Next year, you will be blessed with a child.”
One year later, the couple became happy parents, finally experiencing the joy they had longed for so many years.
The Wisdom of Timing
At first, the couple couldn’t help but wonder aloud:
“Why didn’t we come to the Tzadik years ago? If only we had sought his blessing sooner, we could have had a child long before now. Our lives would have been so different!”
But the Tzadik’s blessing, though immediate in its effect, revealed a deeper lesson about life and faith. The husband gently explained:
“You misunderstand. It wasn’t that the Tzadik came too late—it was never the right time before. Hashem had a plan. The time for birth—et la ledet—was now. All the years before, it simply wasn’t the moment for this blessing to manifest. Hashem arranged everything perfectly, and when the moment arrived, He sent the Tzadik right to our doorstep to help. Not a moment sooner, not a moment later.”
In other words, divine timing governs everything. We may look back and think, I should have done this sooner, or I should have tried that earlier. But those thoughts are a trap. They ignore the wisdom of Hashem, who knows exactly when a blessing is ready to arrive.
Trusting Hashem’s Timing in Every Area of Life
This story isn’t only about children or childbirth. It is a universal lesson for all areas of life. Sometimes we wait for a promotion, a relationship, a breakthrough in health, or the solution to a problem. We may feel impatient, frustrated, or even hopeless.
Yet, like the couple waiting for their child, we must remember:
-
The “when” is in Hashem’s hands.
-
Our effort matters, but the outcome is divine.
-
Looking back with regret serves no purpose.
We plant, we pray, we work hard—but we must also learn the humility to say:
“Hashem, You know the right time. I will do my part, and I trust You for the rest.”
Every event, every blessing, and every trial happens exactly when it should. Our role is to prepare, to pray, to put forth effort—and then to accept Hashem’s timing with faith and gratitude.
Living With Faith, Not Regret
The couple’s story illustrates a vital truth: when the time comes, Hashem ensures that everything falls into place. Trying to force or rush events is futile. Regret over “lost time” distracts us from the miracles unfolding in the present moment.
This principle applies to everyone: parents, professionals, students, entrepreneurs, caregivers. Hashem orchestrates our lives in ways beyond our comprehension. What seems late or unexpected is often perfectly on schedule.
When we align ourselves with this divine rhythm, life becomes less stressful and more meaningful. We begin to see challenges as opportunities, waiting periods as preparation, and outcomes as blessings.
The Takeaway
-
Trust the Timing: Hashem’s plan is perfect, and His timing is impeccable.
-
Do Your Part: Effort, prayer, and preparation are essential, but results are not fully in our hands.
-
Release Regret: Looking back and thinking “I should have” only distracts from what is happening now.
-
Embrace the Present: Miracles appear when the time is right. Stay patient and faithful.
The verse from Kohelet reminds us that life unfolds in stages: there is a time for everything. Understanding this truth gives us peace, patience, and perspective.
When the moment arrives—whether for birth, blessing, or opportunity—we will recognize it, embrace it, and witness the hand of Hashem guiding our lives.
“The time has come,” the Tzadik teaches us. And when Hashem says it is the time, miracles appear.
