When It Doesnt Make Sense – R Fischel Schachter

The Rewards of Irrational Faith

True transformation occurs when we stop calculating our limitations and start trusting in the Infinite. This story illustrates that when we dedicate our lives to the needs of others through Emunah and Bitachon, Hashem opens doors that logic could never unlock. This narrative of a simple carpenter’s radical trust is brought to you by Storiestoinspire.org.

The Carpenter of Kindness

In the winding, sun-drenched alleys of old Jerusalem, there lived a man named Gershon. By trade, Gershon was a simple carpenter, a man whose hands were calloused from years of shaping wood into bookshelves and benches. He was not a man of great means; in those years, the carpentry business in Jerusalem offered a humble life at best. Yet, Gershon possessed a wealth that few could comprehend.

While he spent most of the year scraping together a living, the two weeks preceding the festival of Sukkot belonged entirely to the Almighty. During this time, Gershon ceased all professional work. He would not build kitchens for the wealthy or furniture for the elite. Instead, he dedicated every waking hour to building Sukkot for the widows, the orphans, and the destitute. He refused to accept a single coin for his labor, believing that the joy of helping a fellow Jew fulfill a mitzvah was payment enough.

One year, a wealthy and frequent customer named Mrs. Lowenstein approached him with an urgent request. She wanted a new, state-of-the-art kitchen installed before the holidays and offered to pay Gershon a sum that exceeded his entire annual earnings. “I will pay you more than you could ever dream of making from these Sukkot,” she insisted.

Gershon smiled gently and shook his head. “You cannot pay me more than what I receive from these Sukkot,” he replied, “because I do not charge for them. Their value is beyond money.” When she pressed him for his reasoning, Gershon shared the secret of his heart. “I have an only daughter, Faige, a soul of pure gold. My dream is for her to marry a true scholar, a man of Torah. I am doing something irrational for Hashem by building these homes for free, trusting that He will do something ‘irrational’ for me by providing her with the perfect match.”

An Audacious Leap of Faith

Word of Gershon’s “irrationality” spread quickly through the neighborhood, eventually reaching the ears of a local matchmaker named Reb Shlumka. At the time, Shlumka was facing his own crisis of Bitachon. He had not successfully arranged a marriage since the previous Passover, and his own pockets were empty as the holiday approached. His wife, inspired by the stories of Gershon’s dedication, suggested a radical idea. “Instead of chasing the wealthy families who have everything, why not try to find a match for Gershon’s daughter? He is acting with pure faith; perhaps we should too.”

Shlumka approached Gershon, skeptical but willing. He suggested the sons of local tradesmen—fine boys, but not the elite scholars Gershon envisioned. Gershon remained steadfast. “I have saved three thousand gold coins for her dowry,” he told the matchmaker. “It is everything I have earned from my legitimate work. For my daughter, I want a lion of Torah.”

Shlumka decided to take a leap into the unknown. He approached the wealthiest man in Jerusalem, a philanthropist named Reb Benish, whose son was the most sought-after scholar in the city. Shlumka did not lead with names or professions. Instead, he spoke of a girl with a “soul of the century” and a father who was a pillar of kindness. He spoke of the three thousand gold coins, but more importantly, he spoke of the spiritual merit of the family.

When Reb Benish and his wife asked for the father’s occupation, Shlumka replied vaguely, “He is a builder of great structures.” He intentionally withheld the name, knowing that on paper, a match between a rich tycoon and a poor carpenter made no sense. He acted on a whim of divine inspiration, pushing a proposal that logic would have discarded instantly.

The Miracle of the Sukkah

The climax of this journey into Emunah occurred on the first night of Sukkot. In a move that bordered on the absurd, Shlumka told Gershon that the Benish family was expecting them for a visit. Simultaneously, he had led the Benish family to believe a distinguished guest might stop by.

When Gershon and Faige arrived at the gates of the Benish mansion, dressed in their finest but clearly lacking the markings of high society, the initial reaction was one of shock. Mrs. Benish opened the door and nearly cried out in confusion. The embarrassment was palpable. “There must be a mistake,” she whispered, seeing the humble carpenter at her door.

But as they sat in the Sukkah, something miraculous happened. Rather than shrinking in shame, Faige spoke with a quiet, regal dignity. When Mrs. Benish tried to apologize for the “mishap” and the impending embarrassment of a failed match, Faige replied with stunning clarity: “I am not embarrassed. If this is where Hashem has led us, there is only blessing here. A little bit of public awkwardness is a small price for divine clarity.”

As the evening progressed, the Benish family realized they were not sitting with a “poor carpenter” and his daughter; they were sitting with spiritual royalty. They saw in Faige a depth of character and a level of Torah wisdom that no amount of money could buy. They saw in Gershon the face of a man who lived entirely for others.

A few days later, the engagement was announced. The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. “How did a carpenter’s daughter marry the son of the wealthiest man in the city?” they asked. The answer was simple: Gershon had stepped into the “Yam Suf” of faith before the waters had parted. He did something that didn’t make sense, and in return, Hashem orchestrated a reality that defied logic. These moral stories remind us that when we run toward a mitzvah with everything we have, the Heavens run toward us in return. This is the power of Jews inspiration and the enduring legacy of those who live by their faith.
